Dashpoint Name: Abbott Laboratories on a Cold Evening Sorry for the long delay in the write-up. Things have been a little busy (and a little cold - that -22°C is not a typo). Once again, I was prepping for an annual conference of high school kids that I've been doing since April of 2002. It's briefly mentioned in eight of my previous dashpoint visits (GD7-03921, GD10-BYYL GD33-BYYW, GD33-CADO, GD44-BYYG, GD46-BYYM, GD46-CACU and GD58-BYYF) and you can read more at our website: nicsuperrally.com. The difference this year is that we had to find a new location and build everything from the ground up for our procedures. Previously, we had used Aurora University at Lake Geneva, but last year they announced that the facility was closing to large groups. Our committee landed on Wonderland Camp, a facility donated in part by Will Rogers to the Salvation Army. So a recon trip to Wisconsin was in order, and off we went. It just so happens that there was a dashpoint on the way. We were running late on the way up, so we didn't score the point until our return trip home. The point is just along I-94, some 13 miles south of the Illinois border. Buckley Road is the interchange where folks can exit to reach the point, and is known for two things: The Great Lakes Naval Base (training facility) and Abbott Laboratories. Regarding the latter, here's a quote from their website: We are a global, broad-based health care company devoted to discovering new medicines, new technologies and new ways to manage health. Our products span the continuum of care, from nutritional products and laboratory diagnostics through medical devices and pharmaceutical therapies. Our comprehensive line of products encircles life itself – addressing important health needs from infancy to the golden years. The point is in a neighborhood within view of the labs, but on the west side of the interstate instead of the east where Abbott resides. The houses are fairly large in this wooded area, and we pulled into the driveway of one, getting us within 93 meters of scoring. As we backed out of the driveway, we were startled by the car in the opposite driveway starting up and shining its headlights. After a hasty retreat on this dark night with bitter cold temperatures, we traveled the rest of the 49 miles home and huddled into a nice warm blanket. 3 points for Markwell and Trailblazers
